AUO develops a 1.4" circular AMOLED display

Taiwan's AU Optronics developed a new 1.4" circular AMOLED display, aimed for smart watches. AUO did not disclose the resolution of this display. AUO developed a 5.7" 513 PPI AMOLED and a 1.6" AMOLED for smartwatches

AUO announced that they developed a new 5.7" WQHD (2560x1440, 513 PPI) AMOLED panel. The panel is ultra slim at 0.57 mm and it uses special driver design to increase touch sensitivity and as a result can support 10 touch points.

AUO says that this is the world's highest resolution AMOLED. Actually we know that Sharp, and SEL developed a 13.3" 8K CAAC-OS OLED that achieves 664 PPI - but this one hasn't been unveiled yet (it will be shown at SID 2014 in a couple of months). In addition Samsung Display announced a while back that they are developing a 5.2" WQHD panel which will have a pixel density of 560 PPI. Reportedly SDC is also planning to make a UHD panel that will have a PPI of 860 (!).

We have heard a lot about this camera XGA EVF, and it's good to finally see a real product. During their latest conference call, eMagin reported that they missed their first EVF opportunity with a camera maker for an external EVF because they didn't have enough time to complete the module design. They hope to win the internal EVF contract and if so shipments wil begin in late 2013 or early 2014.

OSD to introduce new AMOLED panels by Q1 2014

We just got word that OSD Displays is set to release three new AMOLED panels by Q1 2014. Since CMEL stopped their AMOLED production in 2009, it's been very difficult to buy AMOLED displays for low-volume products. The only AMOLED suppliers (Samsung, Sony and LGD) do not offer their panels for these kinds of projects (they only target in-house products and mass-volume ones such as mobile phones or digital cameras).

We do not have any information on OSD's upcoming AMOLEDs yet - not the technical details and not who produces those panels (possible candidates include Innolux, Visionox, AU Optronics and RiTDisplay). Hopefully we'll know more soon.
