OLED monitors: introduction and industry news - Page 16
Amtran considers OLED TV production, waits to see market's reaction to LG
Digitimes reports that Amtran Technologie's CEO says that the company is interested to see the market response to LG's 55" OLED TV. Amtran does not rule out the possibility of producing OLED TVs.
Amtran is actually an OEM monitor display producer (they supply LCD monitors to Apple) - and are focused on 23" and 27" monitors. It may be that the actually mean to start producing OLED monitors and not OLED TVs.
Now's your chance to get an OLED TV, cheaper than ever
If you always wanted an OLED TV, but thought it was too expensive, maybe now's your chance. If you live in the UK, anyway. LG is now offering the EL9500 for "only" £1,058 (down from £1,970, that's almost a 50% drop). If you rather have the Sony XEL-1, it costs £999 (but hurry up, there's only one left in stock).
If you live in the US, you may be happy to know that the PVM-2541 is now down to $5490. And you'll get Sony's latest 25.4" OLED panel, Full-HD (1080p), 178-degrees viewing angle, 10-bit drivers and a 1W mono speaker.
OSRAM's new OLED lighting pilot production line is now on line
OSRAM announced that they have launched their new OLED lighting pilot production line in Regensburg, Germany. The company says that they invested about 20 million euros on this project so far (originally they estimated that the total investment in the research and production center at Regensburg will reach 50 million euros).
OSRAM says that the new pilot production line will enable them to double the brightness of the OLEDs and to enhance the durability (they probably mean Lifetime) and efficiency. It will also enable them to produce transparent OLEDs, although they haven't announced any such product yet. OSRAM further says that when the expansion of the production center is complete, manufacturing costs are expected to decline by 90%!
Sony OLED monitor (BVM-E170/E250) introduction video
Update: The video has been removed
Sony published a nice video of a presentation introducing their upcoming professional OLED monitors (the 17"/25" BVM-E170/E250). They explain the OLED technology and how it compares to CRT, LCD and Plasma and introduce the new devices.
Sony to introduce two professional 2D OLED monitors soon?
There are reports that Sony will unveil two professional OLED monitors at the Hollywood Post Alliance Tech Retreat (14-18 February in Palm Springs, California). This won't be Sony's 24.5" glasses-free 3D monitor unveiled at CES (which should also be available during 2011) as the two new monitors will not feature 3D.
Sony already has some professional OLED monitors available - the latest is the PVM-740 (announced in April 2010) - that has a 7.4" (960x540) OLED panel.
Samsung's new AMOLEDs on video
Samsung is showing several new AMOLED displays at the FPD 2010 exhibition, and we now got a nice video showing them all:
The video is showing the new 7" super-AMOLED panel (in a galaxy-tab prototype) and the new flexible AMOLEDs. You can also see a new bendable 5" AMOLED, a concept MID with two 4.5" AMOLED displays. Samsung is also showing the 14" transparent AMOLED laptop which has been unveiled almost a year ago.
TVLogic's 15" 3D OLED professional monitor caught on video
TVLogic's TDM-150W is a professional 3D
Stereoscopic monitor that has a 15" 1366x768 AMOLED panel (this is the LG Display panel as used in the EL9500 OLED TV). The monitor requires active-shutter glasses for 3D images. TVLogic is showing this monitor at the KOBA show 2010:
Sony rep discusses the PVM-740 OLED monitor
A sony rep is talking about their new PVM-740 profession monitor with the 7.4" (960x540) OLED panel.
Are Sony producing new 7.4" OLED panels?
Sony has just announced a new professional monitor, the PVM-740. It has a 7.4" OLED panel that supports 960x540 resolution. In their press-release, Sony say that the OLED monitor is using their "unique Super Top Emission technology to efficiently deliver superb high contrast, high color images, even in ambient light".
As we're not aware of any other OLED maker that produces a 7.4" display, is Sony producing this particular panel? Perhaps they are using the production lines that used to make the 11" XEL-1 OLED TV.
Samsung's 14" transparent laptop: a photo and a video
Samsung are showing a laptop that uses a 14" transparent OLED display:
The OLED is up to 40% transparent. I'm not sure if it's useful, but it sure is amazing. In any case, Samsung did not mention any plans to make this into a real product... Here's a short video:
