NanoMarkets releases new OLED Lighting report, forecasts $6 billion in revenue by 2015

NanoMarkets released a new report (OLED Lighting, An Eight-Year Market Forecast (2010) in which they say that OLED lighting will generate $6 billion in revenue by 2015. OLED lighting will grow quickly because of the need for cost efficient lighting in a number of different applications, including general illumination, architectural lighting, backlighting, vehicular lighting and signage.

Novaled transparent OLED lighting panel

Most firms today focus on general illumination and/or architectural lighting sectors. These two markets will generate around $4 billion in 2015. Vehicular lighting is expected to bring over $750 million.

Nanomarkets say that if OLED will provide an alternative backlighting technology for LCDs, these alone could generate further $1.4 billion by 2015.

Nanomarkets: OLED Material sales to reach $2.9 Billion by 2015

NanoMarkets have released a new report on OLED materials (Markets for OLED Materials: 2010-2017). They forecast that there will be an explosion in demand for OLED materials - which will grow from around $420 million in 2010 to $2.9 billion in 2015.

Key points from the report:

  • OLED Lighting is expected to consume about 70% of OLED materials by 2015.
  • Rigid glass substrates, which offer the best combination of performance, costs and manufacturability will be the de facto option at least through 2012.
  • NanoMarkets sees a significant consolidation of control of important IP in the OLED materials space with UDC, Summation, and LG holding pivotal positions in the OLED materials IP mesh. Access to established IP is an increasingly important factor for success, especially for materials used in the organic layers of OLEDs.

Nanomarkets: the markets for OLED materials will reach $2.7 billion by 2015

After receiving investments totaling billions of dollars over the past decade, the OLED industry is finally poised to take off. According to NanoMarkets, an industry analyst firm based here, the markets for OLED materials will reach $2.7 billion by 2015.

Key Findings:

  • The recent announcement by Nokia requiring its vendors to be capable of producing OLED displays is a strong indication that OLED technology is about ready for broader commercial production. GE Global Research's success with roll-to-roll production of OLED devices indicates that OLED lighting may result in greater near term production volume than displays. Sony meanwhile has launched the world's first OLED TV. The rise of lighting and television applications, in particular, are positive for materials suppliers, because these applications require large OLEDs and hence use much more material than the small cell phone and MP3 player displays that have until recently dominated the OLED space.
