In October 2021, Nintendo launched its first OLED gaming console, the Nintendo Switch OLED. Eight months later, Nintendo announced it shipped over 5.8 million devices, as the Switch OLED is a popular device.

According to new reports/rumors, Nintendo is working on its next-generation console that will replace the Switch and Switch OLED devices, which will utilize an LCD display. The display will be 8-inch in size (bigger than the 7-inch OLED used in the Switch OLED) and will be produced by Sharp.

During CES 2024, many device makers announced new laptops, monitors and TVs that use OLED displays. Here's a list of all these new devices:

LG Display announced that it has successfully developed a 27-inch 480Hz QHD (2560x1440) Gaming OLED display, a world first. The panel offers a 0.03 ms response time, that together with the ultra-fast refresh rate, makes it optimal for gaming. LGD's new panel also implements the company's Micro-Lens Array (MLA) technology to enhance light output. 

LGD says that it will start producing this new panel in the first half of 2024. The company's 2024 gaming OLED monitor lineup will include panels in sizes 27, 31.5, 34, 39, and 45 inches.

Samsung Electronics announced their upcoming 2024 QD-OLED gaming monitor range. It starts with the flagship Odyssey G9 (G95SD) gaming monitor that offers a curved 49-inch 32:9 5120x1440 240Hz QD-OLED panel. 

The other two monitors offer a flat panel. The Odyssey G6 is a 27-inch 1440p monitor that offers very fast 360Hz refresh rate, while the Odyssey G8 (model G80SD) is a larger monitor, with a 32" 240Hz QD-OLED panel.

Samsung Display announced that it is beginning to produce a new 31.5" 4K QD-OLED. This is SDC's highest density QD-OLED display, at 140 PPI. The company recently upgraded its QD inkjet printing deposition system to support this higher resolution. It will also enable SDC to produce 8K 65" QD-OLED displays (that will also be 140 PPI). 

Samsung Display also announced that next year it will start producing 27" QHD QD-OLED monitor panels that will support a 360Hz refresh rate, targeting the gaming monitor market. 

Omdia released its latest analysis on the global large-area display market (LCDs and OLEDs combined), saying that it sees a decline in unit shipments of 7.3% from 2022. This is a sharper decline that what Omdia estimated a few months ago, as the demand continues to slide.

Interestingly, looking at the total market by display area, 2023 will see a slight increase (0.5%) over 2022, this is mostly because consumers are buying larger TVs and larger gaming monitors.

LG Display is demonstrating its new 30" and 77" transparent OLED displays for the first time, at the company's booth at K-Display 2023, in Seoul, Korea.

The new 30" transparent OLED offers HD resolution, while the 77" panel offers 4K resolution. All of LG's latest transparent OLED displays offer 45% transparency. LG showed its entire range of T-OLED displays in a coffee shop setting, in partnership with Starbucks.

UK-based Excyton has won an I-Zone innovation award at SID Display Week 2023, a great testimonial to the interest in the display industry for its novel OLED and microLED pixel architectures.

Excyton concludes a very successful display week. The company's CEO, Peter Levermore, gave a presentation explaining the company's TurboLED display architecture, detailing how the technology works and the simulations the company has performed. The company also had a booth at Display Week's I-ZONE section, where it demonstrated red, green and blue TurboLED devices powered by both deep-color and light-color emitters. In fact the company says that its demonstration attracted a lot of interest from the industry, and it had many constructive meetings during the week that it is following up on to start commercial collaborations in the near future.

LG Display reported its financial results for Q1 2023, with revenues of 4,411 billion Won ($3.3 billion USD), down 40% from the previous quarter and 32% from 2022.

The company says there is 'sluggish demand' for TV and IT products. The company plans to focus on automotive displays, smartphone OLEDs and IT OLEDs (mid-sized panels). LG also aims to increase its sales of OLED gaming monitor panels and transparent OLED displays.

Sony's long-awaited second-gen VR headset, the PlayStation VR2, is finally shipping. Sony is offering the new headset for $549.99 in the US, and it is also available globally.

The PlayStation VR2 is based on dual 120fps 2000x2040 OLED displays that provide a 110-degree FOV. This is the first major VR headset based on AMOLED displays for a long time.
