China-based OLED microdisplay producer Metaways (also called Zhejiang Hongxi Technology) announced that it has successfully completed its Series A funding round, raising almost 500 million Yuan (around $68.5 million USD).
Metaways is building a 12-inch microdisplay production line in Yiwu City, Zhejiang province, and is developing high-end OLED microdisplays, including a 1.4" 4K product.
Sources in Korea suggest that BOE struggles with supplying AMOLED panels to Apple's iPhone, and Apple may switch some of its orders to LG Display and Samsung Display.
BOE is supplying LTPS AMOLED displays to Apple's iPhone 14, 15 and 16 devices, but the company faces quality issues and Apple has rejected many of its displays. It is estimated that it will take at least 6 weeks for BOE to fix the OLED quality problems, and meanwhile since the beginning of 2024 it managed to ship only about 7-8 million panels to Apple - from orders of around 40 million units.
The Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MTIE) has announced that it will allocate 38.7 billion Won (about $26.5 million USD) to support the Korean display industry and help it maintain its competitiveness, especially against competition from China.
The main goal of this new award is to support Korea's OLED and MicroLED display industry. The support will target small and medium-sized enterprises, large corporations and universities and research institutes. The government announced 40 types of projects that will be awarded funds, including novel OLED technologies, AR/VR technologies, microdisplays, and lightfield OLED displays. These are all R&D projects with a time frame of 1-4 years.
MicroLED Connect, our hybrid event series focusing on the microLED industry, will be hosting a two-day virtual event focused on MicroLED and AR/VR innovations, technologies, manufacturing, markets and more. The online event will take place on March 6-7, and will be an excellent opportunity to learn the latest microLED and AR/VR updates and connect with industry professionals on our excellent online event platform. This event could be highly interesting for OLED display developers and anyone working on microdisplays, AR and VR solutions and more.
Today we have published the agenda for this event, with over 25 exciting talks by leading microLED developers, AR/VR developers, supply chain companies and top-edge researchers. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn and connect with the microLED industry. You can register for the event here, with a yearly pass to MicroLED-Connect (with an option to also include entry into our September on-site event in Eindhoven, The Netherlands). Our members also gain access to past event recordings.

Samsung Display announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Qualcomm Technologies, for a potential supply of AMOLED display for Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon Cockpit Experience Development Platform (CEDP) to provide next generation in-cabin experiences.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon CEDP is designed to deliver advanced functionality to help automakers build highly immersive, intuitive and sophisticated in-vehicle experiences. SDC will provide a 34-inch 6K (6,008 x 934) wide OLED display for the CEDP demo kit.
Researchers from the University of Manchester and the University of Cambridge, led by Prof. Alexander Romanov, have discovered a new class of OLED host material, that is highly efficient and also is very easy to synthesize, and thus could be very cheap to produce.
Compared with PPBI, one of the popular hosts for blue OLEDs, the new 1,3,5-oxadiazines (NON) materials possess the same or improved characteristics, such as wide band gap and high triplet state energy up to 3.3 eV, whilst costing 100 times less after sublimation. Dr Hwan-Hee Cho from Optoelectronics Group at the University of Cambridge performed the first tests in deep-blue OLED architecture to demonstrate that NON-hosts can result in up to 21% EQE at practical brightness with CIE colour coordinates (0.17, 0.16) – outperforming other commonly used hosts in the same device stack. NON-host materials and their further derivatives have a strong potential for the OLED community to unlock high-performance electronic displays.
Touch Taiwan is one of the world's leading display conferences, and the OLED-Info team will attend this year's event. Touch Taiwan will take place in Taipei, in April 16-18, and is expected to bring together a large part of the display industry, and include a conference and an exhibition. We're looking forward to seeing new display technologies, products and demonstrators and meeting up with industry leaders!
We'll be happy to schedule meetings - so if you plan to come to the event, do contact us and we will be happy to schedule a meeting. We're really looking forward to this event, to meeting our display industry friends, and to host the special MicroLED Association dinner meeting.
